La Transatlantique d’une vie turns the sea into a language of transformation, freedom and inner discovery
For Moroccan artist Hind Lahrichi, the ocean is far more than a landscape. It is a space of movement, uncertainty and self-discovery, a place where distance becomes emotion and the horizon becomes a question. In La Transatlantique d’une vie, Lahrichi transforms her experience of crossing the Atlantic into a deeply personal visual language shaped by light, color, movement and memory.
The exhibition takes its title from two Atlantic crossings that left a profound impression on the artist. Rather than documenting those journeys literally, Lahrichi translates them into paintings that explore what remains after the voyage: sensations, fragments of memory, moments of fear and calm, and the feeling of confronting something larger than oneself.
Painting the Ocean from Within
The sea occupies a central position in Lahrichi’s artistic vocabulary. Waves, skies, horizons and changing light repeatedly appear throughout her work, yet they are never simply decorative elements. They function as emotional landscapes, reflecting states of tension, freedom, solitude and renewal.
Her paintings move between figuration and abstraction, allowing the recognizable image of the ocean to gradually dissolve into gesture and texture. In Tangier, Lahrichi’s horizons acquire a natural geographical counterpart. The city itself becomes part of the narrative: a place where seas meet and where the idea of crossing is embedded in the landscape.
Ultimately, La Transatlantique d’une vie is not an exhibition about the ocean alone. It is about what happens to a person when confronted with its immensity. Hind Lahrichi turns that confrontation into color, texture and light, transforming a physical voyage into an intimate meditation on freedom, resilience and becoming.
Her ocean is not simply something to be seen. It is something to be remembered, felt and crossed.
