When Hospitals Close, New Models Emerge: The Reichenbach Health Center Story

Hospital closures often spark uncertainty and concern—but in some cases, they also open the door to renewal. In Reichenbach, what was once a struggling hospital has been successfully reinvented as a modern health center. Investor Dr. Kilian Lange explains why he believed in this transformation, how he navigated the challenges along the way, and what lies ahead.

A native of Greiz, Dr. Lange’s ties to the Vogtland region run deep. His family roots stretch across nearby towns, and his early exposure to entrepreneurship—his parents ran a building materials business—helped him build long-standing relationships with architects, engineers, and skilled tradespeople. Over time, this evolved into a strong regional network, both personal and professional.

The Importance of Regional Relationships in Complex Projects

“That local connection mattered enormously,” Lange explains. “When you take on a complex project like converting a hospital, trust is essential. Knowing the people you work with—and being known by them—makes a real difference.” For him, Reichenbach also represented an opportunity to create a model project, one that could demonstrate how transformation can succeed, perhaps even better than elsewhere in Germany.

When the Reichenbach hospital closed following insolvency, many residents feared a collapse in local medical care. Lange, however, saw a different picture. He believed that outpatient services, if restructured properly, could surpass what had existed before. “Emergency care is important, but people depend far more on access to specialists,” he says. “In this region, waiting times were extremely long. Closing that gap became my main motivation.”

A Diverse Investment Background

Although Reichenbach marked his first large-scale project focused on specialist medical care, Lange was no newcomer to development. Since 2009, he has worked extensively in real estate, including heritage properties, residential housing, and commercial buildings. He also invested early in renewable energy and storage technologies—now essential for keeping operating costs manageable in large properties. His experience expanded into care services in 2015, including assisted living and intensive care, making the health center a logical next step.

The opportunity itself came unexpectedly. A call from a business partner alerted him to the hospital’s situation. After visiting the site, Lange was convinced of its potential. The purchase was finalized in mid-2023, ownership transferred in October of that year, and just two years later, the transformation was complete.

The Most Challenging Phase: Building Credibility

The most demanding period came early on. “The first six months were the hardest,” Lange recalls. While the vision was clear, partners had to be convinced. Physicians, tenants, and political stakeholders initially hesitated, waiting to see whether the concept would prove viable. Securing long-term commitments required patience and persistence. Gradually, confidence grew. Each new practice strengthened trust, until demand exceeded expectations.

What sustained him during that phase was a firm belief that failure was not an option. Lange describes the project as a collective gain: patients benefit from reliable, nearby care; medical professionals enjoy improved working conditions; residents in assisted living and intensive care face shorter distances; and the region retains—and creates—jobs. Support from his family and positive feedback from early tenants and staff reinforced his conviction that the project was not an experiment, but a sustainable solution.

Partnerships as a Key Success Factor

Partnerships proved critical throughout the process. Success depended on cooperation across multiple levels—from local residents and businesses to municipal and state authorities, as well as health insurers. While many were invited to participate, AOK PLUS stood out as an early and consistent supporter. “Their involvement went far beyond formalities,” Lange notes. “They contributed ideas, expertise, and genuine engagement. Without that partnership, the project wouldn’t have moved forward.”

A public meeting with Saxony’s Minister-President Michael Kretschmer further underscored this collective commitment. Representatives from politics, healthcare, business, and even former hospital staff came together, often stepping in spontaneously when challenges arose. This shared sense of responsibility became a defining factor in the project’s success.

A Five-Year Vision for Growth

Looking ahead five years, Lange envisions a health center that remains true to its current structure but operates at a higher capacity. Plans include expanded surgical services, two operating theaters running full weeks, and a team of around 15 specialists, potentially with additional areas of expertise. Above all, he hopes the center will continue to meet local needs—and that employees will see it as a better workplace than the former hospital.

Today, Reichenbach is widely regarded as a benchmark for successful healthcare transformation. Lange sees further potential across central Germany and beyond, though he cautions against one-size-fits-all solutions. “Every region is different,” he says. “But the principle remains: a hospital closure doesn’t have to be the end. With the right partners, it can be the beginning of something new.”
